So Jay, it’s been a long week! What’s going on?

Jay: Indeed!

Sterling: …that I somehow didn’t see because I was there with you all week in Portland almost.

Jay: Alright, just getting back to your place. Just yesterday you were here, we just had the live event and I’m feeling really good about it. It was a lot of fun, it was a lot of work but it’s just cool to have our first Internet Business Mastery event done and out of the way. And there’s just a lot of really cool people that attended.

I’m always really thrilled when we meet people who listen to the show because I guess maybe because of who we are and what we do on the show, but it’s just cool to see that we attract these people who are just happy people, ambitious people, want to do cool things in the world, want to do cool things in their live and so it’s just a lot of fun to meet these people in person.

It’s a small sampling of our audience but very cool to meet some people in person and see what they’re up to. What was the experience like for you?

Sterling: Yeah I think that one of the things that I really enjoyed not only was the seminar itself in a mixer the night before where we got to meet people and actually hear their stories and get to know them and see where they’re at. I really, really enjoyed that as well as on Sunday…so the event was on Saturday, the event where we taught all day, but then on Sunday I really enjoyed doing the coaching stuff live one on one.

So we had hour blocks where people would come in and we’d help them with their most pressing problem, or issue, or just to get to the next level on some things. And I really, really enjoyed that.

Jay: Yeah that was really fulfilling because you know, you get that immediate interaction back and forth, you see them react to the ideas you’re giving them and you said that really concentrated impact on one person’s business. And there were a lot of good ideas that came into that board room, that was very exciting to see as well.

Sterling: Yeah and most people were actually right on the cusp of what the next thing was for them. So either they already had some ideas and they were just like oh, which one do you think and just with a couple of questions as they got to the point where they were like, ‘oh yes, this was the thing that I’m going to do.’ Or it was just sometimes somebody pointing out, ‘wow, you’ve got an amazing idea, have you thought of taking it this way, or this way,’ I mean it was sometimes just little tweaks that when we’re so close to these projects ourselves, sometimes it’s just that other person to say, ‘yes, you’re on the right track!’

Jay: Right. Absolutely. I wanted to share with the listeners just a couple comments, some feedback that came from the event. Let’s see, we’ve got Tim from California. He said, “Just a short note to say it was great meeting you and others at the live event you held in Portland, Oregon last weekend. The money spent to attend was definitely worth every penny. I paid upwards of $8,000 before to attend other internet marketing events and learned more last weekend than I did at any other event.” So that was really cool to hear.

Sterling: Yeah, that’s awesome. And then Matt from Florida said, “The conference was great and the private consultation was even better. You’re advice will totally change the trajectory of my business. It was a long flight from Orlando, but worth every mile of travel.” Thanks Matt! That’s awesome!

Jay: And then we have Steve from Ontario that said, “I just want to send a quick thanks to both you and Sterling for the one-on-one consultation yesterday. I really appreciated all the awesome ideas you gave me. You were so generous with your time, it definitely helped me clarify the direction that I’m heading.”

So I’m excited to see where all of you who attended the event take the information from here and definitely keep us in the loop on the continued progress.

Sterling: Well and we now know that this is something we’re going to do from time to time, these live events and we were really excited to see how people were going to take the information to change their lives, I love it.

Jay: And for those of you who are wondering now, ‘well can I get a hold of the content or recordings?’ Well anyone in Traffic Attraction Formula course will be getting access to those recordings right away but stay tuned because I’m sure we’ll be working something out to get those recordings into your hands. So just keep your ear to the ground.

And now the featured segment…

Jay: Alright, so in this episode we wanted to speak to the number one reason that internet entrepreneurs quit. They just quit trying, and how they can avoid that from happening because it’s really unfortunate – somebody gets diving in to build this new dream and make a little extra money online, they’ve got all these hopes, and then this one thing happens that can really stop a lot of people.

And we know this is the case because of surveys and just talking to a lot of beginner internet entrepreneurs, and that thing is overwhelm. I know a lot of people will probably resonate with that word, just the feeling that there’s just too many things to do and not enough time, there’s too many things to learn, how am I supposed to understand them all, how am I supposed to choose the right path amongst all these different possibilities.

There seems to be this huge learning curve, what do we do and I hope I’m painting enough of the picture of overwhelm here for people. Well, we’re definitely in this episode help you bust through one of the big causes of this overwhelm so that it can no longer cause you any problems. We’ll no longer be at risk of stopping you because really that’s the only way I see that people fail in internet business is that they just stop trying.

As long as you keep at it it’s going to happen, so we’re going to dive into one of those right now in this episode.

Sterling: Yeah and by the way, we wanted to let you know that we currently have a free video series where we give tips on overcoming overwhelm and we talk about…here we’re going to talk about just one of the tips, but in the videos we have a whole bunch of them. So here we’re going to talk about one and then we’re going to drill down and give you even more ways to use this one particular tip.

And you can certainly check out all the tips at, that’s where the free videos are going to be and you can also check the show notes where I’ll have a link to those videos as well.

Jay: Perfect, well the thing that we want to talk about today is a little something that we call Just in Time Learning. I think information overload is one of the biggest sources of overwhelm for people, trying to make it happen. No matter what level of internet entrepreneur you are, there’s always just more and more information to consume and hence that overwhelm can start creeping in because you lose focus or you’re just not sure which one to choose or again, too much info and not enough time.

So if I were to break it down into its simplest definition, Just in Time Learning is about only consuming the information that immediately applies to what you need to do next, what you want to accomplish next in your business.

Sterling: Yeah, this is a major component of the information diet that I talk about on the blog from time to time and now I’m to the point where it’s really, really hard for me to hear something that is past what I need to know right now. So if I was working on let’s say site design, and somebody started talking about traffic, my mind would freeze up and I would have to say, “Wait! I can’t hear this now or I’m going to get derailed with the steps I need to take right now,” and end up two weeks later and now I know all this stuff about traffic and let’s say I don’t even have my site up and ready.

So then it’s almost like a slight waste or at least some of it might disappear by the time I need to actually know about traffic, let’s say two months later. Half that stuff I learned about would have just wasted time when I could have just focused on what was next, which let’s say was the site design.

Jay: Absolutely, yeah so it’s become this automatic mechanism for you which is great. So we want to give you four tips how to apply this Just in Time Learning to your own life. So tip number one is to find the right mentor and/or the right system to go through.

There are a lot of different ways to succeed in internet business, a lot of different paths you can take to earning money. And so there’s just as many ways there are out there, you’ll find just as many mentors, or systems, or products, or things that are promising to take you to that point that you want to get to. But it can get very confusing if you start listening to too many people at the same time.

One person might say, “Oh well this is how I my money,” and another person say, “Well this is how I made it this other way over here.” So the goal here is just to find somebody who’s style you resonate with, the types of things they talk about, seem to be a good fit for the kinds of things that you like to do. This is why we talk so much about thinking a bit about what do you want, what’s the kind of lifestyle you want, what’s the kind of purpose that you want for yourself.

We talked about the definite major purpose in the Academy because if you know those things and have a sense of lifestyle and style of business that you want to have in order to feel fulfilled yourself, that’s going to help you find a mentor or a system that’s going to fit that. So you don’t just brute force try to take this square peg in a round hole type of situation and spend all this time following too many mentors or following a mentor that is not going to get where you really want to be.

So find the right mentor and system and just follow that person very carefully and as much as possible filter out the other voices out there. Not that those are….there’s lots of different good systems but again you’ll just find yourself confused if you try to listen to too many voices at the same time. So find the one that just feels like it’s a good fit for you.

Number two is to unsubscribe liberally. This applies to both the email as well as blog subscriptions. A couple ways we consume a lot of information when learning about this internet business stuff again, whether beginner or more advanced, there’s always a lot of people…and it’s smart, it’s smart to go and learn from what other people have done and what has worked well for them and shortcut the process.

But if we’ve got twenty email lists that we’ve subscribed to and every day one of them is trying to pitch us something new or every day, ten emails show up in our inbox just about different new ideas in internet marketing, again that can be very confusing, very overwhelming. And it’s just natural, normal human nature to be very attracted by the shiny and new thing, ooh that sounds new and interesting, maybe this is the secret sauce, maybe this is the thing I’m missing.

I used to feel, and even sometimes I still catch myself doing this. I’d feel like oh, if I don’t read this blog post maybe I’m missing out on the one thing, just the one thing that I’m missing right now. But the truth of the matter is that as I started filtering those things out and started unsubscribing liberally to email lists that I’m on and blogs that I read.

I found myself freed up and finding a lot more energy, a lot more focus and actually making a lot faster progress in my business. Just over the last two weeks I’ve been unsubscribing quite a bit, even once in a while I’ll do an concerted effort of like spending about two weeks in a row where every email in my box I think why did I get this email, is this a list I can unsubscribe from and is it not immediately applicable? We’ll talk about quick filter in a second and it’s been very, very freeing to hit a number of unsubscribe links and it’s down to a very few now.

Sterling: Yeah, I think I’m down to somewhere around three newsletters or so, down from well over thirty. And it was almost like a daily task just to go through all those emails because I could spend an hour just trying to sort through over thirty emails from different lists trying to go oh, do I need this, when do I need this, do I need to sort it into this folder? I mean that’s like a part time job almost sometimes going through all these newsletters.

Jay: And you know, some people might go oh, it only takes me a few seconds to make a decision as to whether archive, delete, or keep it but you’d be surprised at how all these little things really do add up and tax your energy reserves.

Tip number three is the quick filter. Have a quick filter ready, and basically it’s just kind of a 2-step process. When there’s any piece of information that shows up, whether it’s an email, whether it’s a blog post, whether it’s a course that somebody just pitched to you, whether it’s a friend going ‘oh my gosh, here’s this new thing I’ve just been learning about.’ I think a part of this is about getting into tune with that little voice…it’s actually a little feeling of anxiety that starts coming up.

I’m like oh my gosh, I’m missing out…and I think we can kind of get addicted to that feeling. If you sense that at all the first thing to do is ask yourself, does this apply to my top three goals that I’m trying to accomplish in my life and business right now?

Sterling: Yeah, and then the next question is, is the information actionable? Can I take action now today, or this week, or at the longest this month? Not can I take action four months from now, is this going to be useful for me way later? And the Getting Things Done system that is talked about in the book with the same name, is very useful for sorting information to make sure that you are only going to look at the actionable information when you need it.

Jay: It’s as simple as that, two pieces – ask yourself the question, does this apply to my top three goals? And then number two, will I put this into action in the next few weeks? And if you answer no to either of those, then dump it, get rid of it. Just say you know what, let it go. It’s okay, when you need it later, you can go find it. A lot of other things will always be showing up and it’s not going to be the end of your business if you just let it go now.

So one thing that can help you with this is to create yourself…if you’re finding yourself having a hard time just letting things go, then maybe baby step through it, and I do this sometimes, actually quite often. I’ll create a sometime/maybe folder and it’s just a folder where it’s like oh okay, well this might…I’m still having a hard time just dumping it out into oblivion where I might never find it again and so I’ll just dump it into this folder, it might be oh I’ll grab this PDF report and put it into the folder, I’ll grab this email and dump it into the folder, this link to this web page, and all this stuff later.

And the truth of the matter is usually later what I end up doing is I end up deleting that folder altogether. I’ll go in there and I’ll glance at it and I’ll be like yeah, you know that felt really important to me two months ago but clearly I’ve been living fine without it. It still doesn’t apply, and all of a sudden I’m able to be detached from it and go…just maybe because it’s not in that moment or whatever and just hit the delete button and my computer says, ‘do you want to delete this permanently?’ And I go yes and away it goes.

Sterling: Yeah, it’s a lot easier to do it that way. For me it’s about the same, I actually schedule time once every month or every six weeks or so even to just go quickly through that folder and see if anything is moved from the sometimes/maybe to actionable right now. And I’ve have to say 80+% of the time it’s just deleted.

Jay: And that brings up our fourth tip right here and that is the 80/20 rule which applies to so many things in life and it’s the simple thing of probably 80% of the results are really going to come from only 20% of the information. So we need to find that 20% of information that’s going to give us the greatest percentage of the results that are available.

So if you’re thinking about learning about traffic right now, it’s like okay what are the one or two things I can learn about traffic that are going to bring me 80% of the results right now rather than getting consumed in trying to learn about ten different traffic things all at once. Or even if you’ve narrowed it down to one specific traffic thing that you’re learning about, I can really get down these rabbit holes of details of like oh, I want to know everything there possibly is to know.

But the truth of the matter is, if I just find that one right course, or system, or mentor they can tell me you know what, here’s the five things I did that really got most of the results, don’t worry about any of the rest. Then it’s just a nice weight off of you and it reduces the amount of time and energy that you spend. So use that 80/20 rule liberally and all the time as you clean through all the different information that’s available to you.

Sterling: Yeah, this Just in Time Learning stuff made it from where I was addicted to learning, almost for learning sake. Like I was just addicted to new information. Now I’m addicted to correct action. So just having the information that’s going to make it so that I can take action. I love being able to take action now which is certainly the difference between success and failure. You can know everything about your subject that you could possibly ever want but if you don’t have action, it’s almost meaningless.

Jay: I mean learning’s an important thing, it’s definitely…we’ve had good mentors, we have good mentors, we go through courses from time to time. We wouldn’t be where we are right now if we hadn’t spent some time learning but we’ve learned to get very, very deliberate about our learning because learning can suck a lot of time and energy and prevent you from actually taking action.

So these four tips right here will help you with not getting overwhelmed, it’s about moving forward. And then when you move forward and you do take those little actions and you do get just the right information at the right time, you feel great, you feel confident because you accomplished something, you got something done, you saw the results and you didn’t sit there and lose a lot of energy and time thinking about five different options, you just move forward.

So these four tips – mind the right mentor or system to guide you. Number two – unsubscribe liberally. Number three – have a quick filter, does it apply to my top three goals right now, will I put it into action in the next month or two? If not, get rid of it. And number four – use that 80/20 rule. Just get the 20% of the stuff that’s going to give you the greatest amount of the results and just stick with that, call it good enough and go ahead and move on.

And with these four tips and applying Just in Time learning, you’ll find that your overwhelm goes way down and hence your progress and success and just feeling good about what you’re doing will go way up. So we want to invite you to get more tips about annihilating the overwhelm, Just in Time Learning is just one of five tips that we share with you in a brand new video series you can find by going to

Alright, for this quick announcement here, actually wanted to share an email that came in from a new listener by the name of Lenore. And she says, “Wow, I’m so impressed by the Academy. I read the 4-Hour Workweek years ago and couldn’t find the mentor or help that I needed. I wasted lots of time and money, I studied many gurus but I never signed up with anyone but your Academy answered my need for a soup to nuts resource. My aha-moment came during course three on time management, mind mapping, and the organization chart. Eureka! Now I don’t have to beat my head against the wall, it was getting painful. In fact, I’m thinking of dropping your system into my husband’s engineering firm, he really needs it. So onward and upward as I go through the course and build my umpire.” If only everyone could see what a great value the Academy is for the tools and mentoring to build passive income online. Thanks guys, see you in Bora Bora, Lenore.”

Sterling: Very nice. It would be interesting to hear how somebody merged it with a regular business like an engineering firm.

Jay: Yeah, that’s really cool. Yeah, thanks for your feedback Lenore, we’re excited that you finally found something that works so well for you and keep us in the loop on your continued progress, that’s fantastic!

Sterling: Well you’ve got a whole bunch more courses to come, hopefully there’ll be lots of aha-moments!

Jay: Absolutely.

It’s time for the Internet Business Quick Tip…

Jay: So Sterling, I have a question for you.

Sterling: Yes.

Jay: What state do you think internet business is searched for the most in the United States?

Sterling: Ooh, let’s see here. Uh, I know Utah is actually one of those ones that people are looking for opportunities like this really high, but that might be in the top three. I’m not sure.

Jay: Well actually you’re really close. Utah is actually number two. And Salt Lake City where you live is number five city on the list of cities where people search most for this stuff. Nevada is number one.

Sterling: Oh wow.

Jay: And Florida is number three, which is actually interesting to me because I think we had a few people from Florida that came to our event this last weekend. So Orlando, Tampa, Miami, these are all rated in the top 5 cities that search for internet business online.

Sterling: Yeah, so Utah – there were several people from Utah too so there you go.

Jay: There you go, yeah. That’s actually very interesting even in that small sampling of our audience, that held true. So anyway, this is some interesting information and of course if we ever wanted to do any kind of advertising where we were focusing specifically on certain geographic areas whether with radio or newspapers or even on Facebook or something like that, it might be interesting to just go ahead and focus on the places where we know people are looking most for that kind of thing.

So for anybody who thinks this information might be useful for them, the tool that I’m looking at right here to find out where people are searching most for a keyword like internet business or whatever your topic may be is Google Trends. You can go to and type in any search keyword and it will show you over the last several months of several years what the search volume has looked like, it will show you geographic areas, popular news stories that have happened at different times.

So some very interesting information that can be quite useful when it comes to advertising and doing just kind of some key word based and search based research for whatever your topic is online. So you can check that out again, Google Trends and it’s free to use at

Sterling: And if you’d like to see how we use it, we actually made a video in the Academy with all the cool little things we do with it and how we use it. So that’s in the Academy. Now if you’d like dozens of other resources such as this one, you can find them in the Internet Business Mastery Academy, along with video tutorials showing you exactly how we use them.
